An analytical survey was conducted on 209 multiple-case families and 859 leprosy born children relating to factors involved with epidemiology of leprosy. And further more, studies on chemoprophylaxis of leprosy with D.D.S.(4:4¡Ç -diamino-diphenyl sulfone) on those leprosy born children were studied. 1) The 209 multiple-case families consisted of: Two-case family¡¦167(79.9%), Three-case family¡¦36(17.2%), Four-case family¡¦5(2.4%), Five-case family¡¦1(0.5%). 2) Of 194 multiple-case families, index cases are grouped into: Father¡¦54(27.8%), Mother¡¦47(24.2%), Brother¡¦34(17.4%), Sister¡¦18(9.3%), Uncle and Aunt¡¦9(4.6%), Offspring¡¦8(4.1%), Grandmother¡¦5(2.6%), Spouse¡¦3(1.6%), Grandfather¡¦1(0.5%). Index cases in ascendants such as grandparents father or mother, and uncle or aunt numbered 116(59.8%), that in same generation such as spouse, brother and sister counted 8(4.1%). 3) The relation between the leprosy types of index cases and infected cases show that non-lepromatous type of leprosy occupies 71.4% when the index cases are the parents while 34.3% when the index cases are non-family members. Infected cases among families from lepromatous index cases show more non-lepromatous type of leprosy(61.8%) than from non-lepromatous index case(51.0%). 4) The severity and deformities of the disease of patients from multiplecase families are milder than the patients from single case families(severity; 52.8 : 42.4, deformities: 44.7 : 36.0). 5) Age of 859 leprosy born children at the time of separation from their parents are: Under 5 yr¡¦223 cases(25.9%), 5 yr. To 10 yr.¡¦528 cases(31.9%), Over 10 yr.¡¦ 108(12.7%). 6) The 859 leprosy born children are classified by the length of time after their separation from their parents as follows: Under 3 yrs.¡¦397 case(46.2%), Under 6 yrs.¡¦ 135 cases(85.5%), our 6 yrs.¡¦124 cases(14.5%). 7) Out of 923 families with leprosy parents, 1033 children were born. 77(7.4%) of them developed leprosy. Incidence of leprosy among the leprosy born children from lepromatous type parents either mother, father or both are 11.2% while it is 4.8% when there are no lepromatous cases in parents. Of the 77 the ratio of lepromatous and non-lepromatous are 22 : 55. 8) Age of onset of 157 leprosy born children are : Under 5 yrs.¡¦8 cases(5.0%), Under 10 yrs.¡¦62 cases(39.3%), Under 15 yrs.¡¦123 cases(73.2%), Over 15 yrs.¡¦34 cases(21.5%). 9) 750 leprosy born children were devided in two groups, the first group, 325 children, were given D.D.S., 50-300 mg weekly, for the period of 7 months to 5 years, and the second groups, 435 children, were not given any prophylactic measures but observed as control for the similar period of time. Among the experimental groups, the first group, developed no leprosy incidence out of 325 children while 31 children.(7.8%) out of 435 children developed leprosy. |
