Before sulphone and its allied drug were used for leprosy, Pinkerton and Kirwan stated that the probability is that every case of lepromatous leprosy will develop ocular complications of one sort or another. Holmes and Lowe reported the profound effect on the ocular lesion. And McLaren, after ophthalmologicat survey with sitemap of 1,200 leprosy patients in leprosarium reported 10% of leprosy ocular complication and 30% of nonleprosy eye diseases; chronic iritis which is main cause of blindness of leprosy patient was found in only 35 patients, 3%. And no patient of cataract due to iritis was reported. Today, in Korea there are many blind leprosy patients who had lost their sight before sulphone derivatives came into use or were unable to reach the proper use of it. And many operations are performed for such cataract of leprosy. Here, we are reporting the observation of 10 operations performed during 1963 and 1964 at leprosy Mission Treatment Centre in Taegu. |
