¿ä¾à Nail changes may occur as the initial manifestation of some systemic diseases, and lately these changes are of increasing interest in the cosmetic aspect. Leprosy can cause many types of nail changes. This study was conducted to investigate the fingernail changes in leprosy patients.
We examined all fingernails in 76 leprosy patients registered in the leprosy mission, Jesus Hospital. Of these, 66 patients had one more fingernail changes. The changes were classified as caused by neuropathy and trauma, vascular deficits and miscellaneous factors in addition to distribution and hand disability grading. We excluded fingernail changes caused by bacterial and fungal infection. Of 66 patients, 44 patients had changes caused by neuropathy and trauma, 18 patients by vascular deficits, and 50 patients by miscellaneous factors. Often more than one factor were involved. Both hands showed even distribution of fingernail changes, and both thumbs were most affected.
Number of fingernail changes per capita was 3.71. Number of lunular changes was 27(40.9%), including 19 in macrolunula and 8 in pseudomacrolunula, probably suggestive of relation with nail changes in leprosy. Especially, these changes were prominent in grade of hand disability. The higher hand disability grading was, the more mean number of fingernail changes per capita was examined.
Consequently, the fingernail changes were not so specific in leprosy it was worth while to study fingernails in understanding leprosy patients and their unsightly cosmetic effect on the social life.
