¿ä¾à Recently, the incidence of new leprosy patients has tended to decrease annually. The
purpose of this study is to analyze the recent trends of new leprosy patients for
eradicating the infection sources, thus preventing the spread of leprosy. Authors have
reviewed all of the patients who were diagnosed as leprosy from January 1987 to
December 1996 at Chilgok Catholic Dermatologic Clinic and the results are as follows.
A total of 116 patients was diagnosed as leprosy at their first visit to the hospital.
The sex ratio of male to female was 1.04:1. For overall onset, the highest incidence was
in the 3rd decade accounted 21.6% of the cases, whereas the 6th decade showed the
highest incidence at the time of visit. The mean age of new patients was 40.32¡¾18.52
years in males and 52.80¡¾16.20 years in females. The distributions of leprosy were
47.4% for lepromatous type, 31.9% for tuberculoid type, 19.0% for borderline group and
1.7% for indeterminate group. Compared with type and age distribution, the highest
incidence in age group was 50-59 years for lepromatous and tuberculoid type and 30-39
years for borderline group. The sex ratio of male to female with the lepromatous type
was 1.39:1. This was higher than that of the tuberculoid type in 0.95:1. The most
common symptom and body site of disease at the onset were anesthesia and
extremities. The distribution of present address and birth place was mainly in Kyeong
Buk province. By the occupational distribution, jobless wanderer was most common,
with next high in order being farmer.
The AFB-positive rate among new patients was 56.8%, and the most prevalent
bacterial index was 3.0-3.9. About 30% of new patients had family history of leprosy.
The distributions of disability grading of patients were 85.3% for grade ¥°, 13.8% for ¥±,
and 0.9% for ¥².
Therefore, as the results of the epidemiological study of new leprosy patients during
the recent 10 years, the incidence seemed to have tendency in decrease annually, giving
the great prospect in the sociomedical respect. However, as the lepromatous type with
high rate of bacterial index had about the half the patients and high rate of their family
history was shown, the prevention of spread and treatment of leprosy patients as well
as more positive leprosy campaign would be still needed.
