This study was conducted to analyze statistically 4,535 in-leprosy patients who had been admitted at the Leprosy Mission Jesus Hospital for 30 years from January 1960 through December 1989. 1. The total number of in-leprosy patients was 4,535 which had been increasing yearly. Male to female ratio(was) 2.4:1. 2. In 2,935 patients whose type of leprosy could be identified, lepromatous type occurred in 1,777(60.2%), tuberculoid type in 877(29.7%), borderline group in 158(5.4%) and indeterminate group in 141(4.8%). 3. The most frequent was the age group of the 5th decade(223%), with the next being that of the 4th decade(22.6%). 4. Thirty four percent of the patients were hospitalized for 2-4 weeks, and 21.0% for 1-2 months 5. The distribution of the patients according to the department was as follows : 48.6% of them were admitted in orthopedic surgery, 15.1% in internal medicine, 14.3% in ophthalmology and 14.0% in dermatology 6. The frequent presenting illnesses were ulcer (23,4%), leprosy reaction (93%), deformities of the extremity(6,0%) and osteomyelitis(5.1%). 7. A total of 1,640 patients were received operations, 52.4% of them were treated in orthopedic surgery, 31.4% in ophthalmology and 6.3% in general surgery 8. The frequent operations were amputation (17,0%), sequestrectomy (13.2%) lens extraction(l1.0%) and tarsorrhaphy(10.1%) |
