Serologic tests for syphilis were done in 153 leprosy patients at the institute and the following results were obtained. 1. 4 cases were reactive in TPHA test and had clinical history, so prevalence rate of syphilis was 2.6% showing no differences from that of normal healthy control group. 2. 25 cases (16.3%) were reactive in RPR card tests, and among them 21 cases were biological false positive. So BFP rate was 84%. 3. All the BFP cases were LL and BL (LL ; 14 patients, BL ; 7 patients). And no BFP cases could be found in BT and TT types. 4. Among 107 patients who were in active state in leprosy, 17 cases (15.9%) showed BFP and among 42 patients who were in inactive state in leprosy, 4 cases (9.6%) showed BFP. So BFP rate was higher in active cases, but this was not statistically significant (P=0.05). 5. Among 9 leprosy patients having ENL, 5 cases (56%) showed BFP, and among 121 patients not having ENL, 16 cases (13%) showed BFP. So BFP rate was remarkably higher in leprosy patients with ENL. |
