A study on the nerve trunk damage in 265 untreated new leprosy patients diagnosed in the Institute for Leprosy Research, Korean Leprosy Control Association was carried out and the following results were obtained. 1. Of 265 cases, 143 cases(54%) had nerve trunk damage. Male cases had higher frequency of nerve damage than female, and the highest frequency with 69.2% was shown in the TT cases and the lowest with 47.3% in the LL cases. 2. Among six nerve trunks which damaged commonly in leprosy, the highest frequency of nerve damage was shown in the ulnar nerve and the lowest in the radial nerve. In the cases with combined nerve damages, many were found in the LL cases and few were in the TT cases. Combined damages with ulnar and median nerve are commonly seen. 3. With the observation by the less than one year of duration from onset to diagnosis, it was found that LL and BL cases had less nerve damage, however, BT and TT cases had high frequency of nerve damage. Generally, longer the duration from onset to diagnosis, much more cases had nerve damages. 4. Nerve damage is an ever-present serious complication of all forms of leprosy. We now understand much of its pathology and some of its pathogenesis. It is considered that about seventy percent of all registered leprosy patients in the country have some deformities and disabilities on the face, hands and feet due to nerve trunk damages. Therefore, the rahabilitation control programme should be considered as an important leprosy control in future. |
