¿ä¾à A study on ocular complication was carried out in 117 leprosy patients who were
examined opthalmologically for 1 year from Jan. 1988 to Dec. 1988 at Institute for
Leprosy Research, KLCA and the following results were obtained.
1. Of the 117 examined patients, 78 patients (67%) had ocular complication.
2. Of the 78 patients with ocular complication,49 were male,29 were female (Sex ratio
1.7 : 1), but considering sex ratio 1.6 : 1 in all examined patients, there were no sexual
difference in prevalence rate of ocular involvement.
3. Ocular complications were more common in the older patients and those with
longer duration.
4. Ocular complications developed in 39% of all 77 and BT cases, and 77% in all BL
and LL cases. So ocular involvement was more common in L type.
5. Individual lesions of ocular complications and prevalence rates were as follows:
Madarosis; 45 cases (38 %), Lagothalmos; 31 cases (34%), Ectropion; 12 cases,
Entropion/Trichiasis; 6 cases, Corneal anesthesia; 17 cases, Corneal ulcer; 8 cases,
Exposure keratitis; 27 cases, Pannus; 8 cases, Superficial punctate keratitis; 5 cases,
Interstitial keratitis; 4 cases, Spiscleritis; 3 cases, Scleritis; 2 cases, Acute iridocyclitis,
12 cases, Chronic iridocycyclitis; 18 cases, Irregular pupils; 20 cases, Abnormal pupillary
reflect, 20 cases, Anisocoria; 16 cases, Secondary glaucoma; 3 cases.
