¿ä¾à A study on the status of Mycobacterium leprae in the nasal mucus according to
antileprosy treatment for 80 lepromatous leprosy patients including 56 new cases and 24
relapse cases in the institute was carried out and the following results were obtained.
1. Before starting chemotherapy, M. leprase positive cases in nasal mucus were 33
cases (58.9%) among 56 lepromatous new cases and were 13 cases (54.2%) among 24
lepromatous relapse cases.
2. Observing the relation between bacterial index(BI) of skin smears and that of nasal
mucus before treatment, generally BI of nasal mucus showed much higher in those
having high BI of skin smears. And BI of nasal mucus became negative more quicker
than BI of skin smears in the same patients.
3. In order to become negativity of BI in the nasal mucus according to chemotherapy
in all lepromatous new patients, it was taken 24 months in the ¥°-A regimen group, 12
months in ¥°-D regimen group and 6 months in MDT regimen group, so that MDT
regimen is the best for achieving negativity of nasal mucus in a short time.
4. In lepromatous relapse cases, negativity of nasal mucus was taken for 3 months in
¥±-A regimen group and 12 months in ¥±-D regimen group.
5. Therefore, it is considered that combined therapy with DDS, rifampicin and
clofazimine is the most effective to achieve negativity of nasal mucus within the
shortest period of time, that is within 3 months.
