The serological activities of the specific phenolic glycolipid - I from Mycobacterium leprae were examined by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent array) using ND-O-BSA against sera from 404 patients with leprosy, 81 contacts and 118 normal persons as control group. The results obtained were summerized as follows: 1. The mean absorbance and positive rate of anti-PGL-I IgM was 0.556 (68%) in multi-bacillary, 0.231 (39%) in paucibacillary leprosy patients,0.119 (11%) in contacts and 0.035 (3%) in normal control persons and the highest in multibacillary group. 2. The seroreactivity to PGL-I in new (0.547) and relapse (0.498) of leprosy patients was slight higher compared with that (0.369) of old cases. 3. There was a correlation between the results of anti-PGL-I IgM and bacterial index. 4. Anti-PGL-I IgM decreased rapidly in 1-2 years of treatment. 5. Among immunoglobulin classes tested, however IgM was the major anti-PGL-I antibody clam present in sera from leprosy patients, there was a clear evidence that only IgG was prominent particularly in patients with long-term therapy. |
