The authers examined tole eyes of 380 leprosy patients in National Sorokdo hospital to investigate facial and trigeminal nerve involvements. The results were as follows: 1. The prevalence of lagophththalmos only, corneal anesthesia only and the injury of both nerves were 84(22.1%), 12(3.2%) and 139 patients (36.6%) respectively. 2. 68 patients(17.9%) were blind and the prevalence of the injury of both nerves in these was 75%(51 patients). So the combination of lagophthalmos with corneal anesthesia is particulary dangerous. 3. There was a correlation between the prevalence of nerve involvements and the duration of leprosy. 4. There was no relationship between the obvious facial lesions and the presence of lagophthalmos and corneal anesthesia. 5. Out of 151 patients with corneal anesthesia 139(92.1%) had lagophthalmos, while out of 229 patients without corneal anesthesia, 84(36.7%) had lagophthalmos. This demonstrated that lagophthalmos was significantly more frequent among patients with corneal anesthesia(p<0.01). This finding is consistent with Antias theory of the pathogenesis of facial palsy. |
