Á¦¸ñ Clinico-epidemiological Study on Patients With Leprosy Visited to Institute for Leprosy Research, KLCA During Past 8 Years

¿ä¾à Clinics-epidemiological study on 1204 patients with leprosy visited to Institute for
Leprosy Research, Korean Leprosy Control Association during past 8 years from
January, 1978 to December, 1985 was carried out and the following results were
obtained.
1. The number of leprosy patients visited to our Institute has been increasing recently
and about 200 newly coming leprosy patients has been maintained every year in average
with increasing number of female patients.
2. Age of onset was shown peak curve in the age group of under 20 years (50.8%)
and age at time of visit shown peak curve in the age group of 41-60 years (49.3%),
and therefore, majority of leprosy patients hate visited to our Institute 5-10 years later
from the time of their onset of the disease.
3. About 30% of leprose Patients visited to our Institute had their family contact
history before getting their leprosy, and there were trio difference by yearly observation.
4. While place of birth of leprosy patients was mainly distributed at Yong-Nam and
Honam area, their present address was situated at Seoul, Kyeonggi-do and Inchon
around our Institute.
5. The distribution of present address among new leprosy patients mild relapsed
patients detected at our Institute was mainly shown in Seoul, Kyeonggi-do mild Inchon.
6. 198 new leprosy patients were detected at our Institute during past 8 years and
there is a increasing tendency to detect the number of new cases recently. The L/T
ratio has been decreasing with increased number of paucibacillary cases. Interestingly,
while tile age of onset of male patients showed peak curve at the age group of 10-19
years, that of female patients showed peak curve at the age group of 50-59 years.
7. 226 relapse cases were detected during past 8 years in our Institute and the
number of relapse has been increasing recently. Relapse cases were found mainly from
lepromatous and borderline-lepromatous patients, and average duration from initiation of
chemotherapy to the time of relapse was 17 years.
8. Among 1204 leprosy patients visited to our Institute during past 8 years, only 397
cases have been treated regularly at our Institute.
9. 417 leprosy patients were admitted to our Institute for the treatment for newly
detected multibacillary leprosy patients, plantar ulcers, ENL reactions, relapses and for
reconstructive surgery etc.
10. The frequency of ENL reaction appearance among active multibacillary leprosy
patients after chemotherapy showed that 45% of new patients had lepra-ractions and
28% of relapse case had lepra-reactions.
