Eleven patients with active lepromatous leprosy were observed before and after immunotherapy with a mixture of heat-killed M. leprae and live BCG has been given once in two months. The vaccine we use contains 1¡¿108 bacilli of M. leprae from nodules of lepromatous Patients and killed in the autoclave at 120¡É during 15 minutes, Plus viable BCG in a 0.02mg dose, the vaccine is applied intradermally in 2 sites at deltoid regions, After three or four times immunotherapy with this mixture, the following results were obtained. 1) Appearance of reversal reaction was observed in 6 of 11 trial cases after immunotherapy and rapid clinical improvement is expected. 2) The decrease of Bacterial Index by skin scraping examination was not shown in 10 cases: however one case showed 1+BI decrease. 3) 10 cases (91%) has shown positive conversion of Fernandez reaction after immunotherapy and 4 cases (36.4%) shown positive conversion of Mitzuda reaction. 4) The injections were well tolerated, but small ulcer developed at injection sites in many case |
