¿ä¾à Mycobacterium leprae obtained from previously untreated new cases of lepromatous
leprosy and relapsed cases of lepromatous leprosy were inoculated into the foot-pads of
CBA mice and fed under 20¡¾1¡É room temperature, and the following results were
observed. A limited multiplication of M. leprae was recognized in the foot-pads of mice
and tile highest rate of bacilli increase was shown in the harvest of nine months after
inoculation. There was no difference in the rate of multiplication in the foot-pads of
mice between dapsone-sensitive and dapsone-resistant M. leprae. Average generation
time was 45.2 days and there was some difference according to the times of harvest.
The interest fact was that the inoculum obtained from leprosy patients who had solid
bacilli less then 1% and even 0% in skin smears have multiplied well in the foot-pads
of mice. It is suggested that the morphological index may not be a sensitize index may
the viability of M. leprae.
