In leprous tissues the causative bacilli, live or dead, are present showing various shapes and metabolical activities. The stainabilities of the bacilli are affected not only by staining methods but also by the conditions of the bacilli themselves. Authors compared the differences of stainabilites of various forms of lepra-bacilli in paraffin-embedded skin tissues of 48 cases of leprous patients by Ziehl-Neelsen and Fite-Faraco methods. The shapes of the bacilli were sorted into five forms: globi, bacilli-groups, solid, granular, and fragmented etc. The results were summariged as follows. 1. Although the quality and numbers of the all the five forms of bacilli were better and more in Fite-Faraco method, it was only the globi count which showed exceedingly great difference between the two staining methods. 2. The number of cases which were bacilli-negative with Ziehl-Neelsen method but posive with Fite-Faraco method were five(10.4%). There was no case which was Ziehl-Weelsen positive and Fite-Faraco negative. |
