In the effect of DDS on multiplication of Mycobaterium leprae in mouse foot-pads from previously untreated patients with lepromatous leprosy and relapsed patients under treaiment with DDS alone, the following results were obtained. Among eight new cases, suppression of multiplication with three different DDS mouse diets of 0.01%, 0.001% and 0.0001% was shown in 2 cases, multiplication of Mycobaterium leprae with 0.02% DDS diet shown in 2 cases, with 0.001% DDS diet in one case and with 0.0001% DDS diet in 3 cases. These six cases shown multiplication of Mycobaterium leprae in the foot-pads of ddy mice fed with DDS diet may be considered as primary DDS resistance. Among four relapse cases, multiplication of Mycobaterium leprae with 0.01% DDS diet was shown in 3 cases and multiplication with 0.0001% DDS diet shown in 1 case. These cases are surely considered as secondary DDS resistance. From the above experimental results, it might be suggested that the value of DDS effectiveness in the treatment of leprosy is significantly reduced nowadays than ever before. Therefore, DDS resistance is recently erupted as a serious problem in the leprosy control in the country. |
