The authors observed a limited multiplication Mycobaterium leprae in the foot-pads of ddy mice inoculated with Mycobaterium leprae from eight untreated patients with lepromatous leprosy and five relapse patients under treatment with DDS for more than five years. In the results of three months after inoculation, ten of fifteen cases showed 5.9 folds of bacterial increase and 25 days of generation time. In the results of six months after inoculation, eight of nine cases showed 7.7 folds of bacterial increase and 36 days of generation time. It was conclusively demonstrated that Mycobaterium leprae could be transmitted to the foot-pads of ddy mice in the country fed under the condition of room temperature 20¡¾1¡É. The time of harvest after inoculation of Mycobaterium leprae into mouse foot-pads may be suitable between six months and, one year. The mouse foot-pad test will greatly contribute to leprosy control programme in the country with the confirmation of viability of Mycobaterium leprae and effectiveness or resistance of antileprosy drugs. |
