106 cases with leprosy were investigated for liver damage through routine liver function tests and serum transaminase assays of SGPT and SGOT during E.N.L. lepra reaction and the following results were obtained. 1. No special abnormal findings were found during lepra reaction by routine liver function tests. 2. On serum transaminase assays, patients with lepra reaction showed slightly higher mean value of SGPT and SGOT than those without reaction, however, with in normal levels. 3. There were more cases shown high serum transaminase activity in patients with lepra reaction than those without reaction. 4. In order to investigate liver damage in leprosy patients, serum transaminase assays are more sensitive index than other routine liver function tests. 5. It is considered that leprosy patients who have liver invaded with many leprosy bacilli would occur acute liver damage during lepra reaction though majority of them wouldn't.. |
