¿ä¾à The increased frequency of hepatitis B virus antigen (HB Ag) bas been reported in
lepromatous leprosy and in other chronic diseases characterized by the impairment of the
immune mechanism. It is suggested that lepromatous leprosy patients with HB Ag may
have chronic anicteric hepatitis since the patients appear to have slightly elevated
glutamic-pyruvic transsminase (SGPT) levels.
In Korea, HB Ag, chronic anicteric hepatitis and leprosy are relatively common, so
that an appropriate epidemiologic study can be planned. We have therefore studied the
distribution of HB Ag as well as of serum transaminase activity in various groups of
leprosy patients in order to investigate their possible relation to the characteristics of
these patients.
