Leprosy is believed to have existed in Korea since the 13th century. The nation-wide leprosy control program practically commenced in 1967 by she Government with establishmend of 9 governmental and 3 voluntary mobile teams covering 103 counties (Gun) in 6 provinces. At each Gun Health Center, a leprosy case worker was appointed to control home patient management as wel1 as to institute a program of new case detection. The present population of the Republic of Korea is 31,438,768. The total population in rural areas covered by the field programme is 14,318,965 out of 18,451,126 in 6 provinces (the population of the urban areas (Cities) were excluded from the project).
