For the evaluation of diagnostic significance of the helix and earlobe in leprosy, bacillary indecies and histopathological studies from upper and middle portions of the helix and earlobe were carried on 25 lepromatous, 13 tuberculoid, 7 indeterminate and 6 borderline leprosy. Results obtained as follows : 1) In all cases of leprosy, bacillary index showed higher positivity in the face and lower positivity in the back. 2) No specific differences of clinical features of the ear were noted in all cases of leprosy, except prominent infiltration in lepromatous leprosy. 3) Bacillary index showed the highest positivity in the lower portion of the helix. Lepromatous and borderline leprosy revealed higher positivity in the upper portion of the helix than that of the middle portion. 4) Histopathological coincidence rates between ear and skin lesions were 72% lepromatous, 38.5% tuberculoid, 57.1% indeterminate and 33.3% borderline leprosy. 5) In lepromatous leprosy, histopathological coincidence rate between ear ant skin lesions showed the highest result from the middle portion of the helix. |
