The results of the clinical study of 261 leprosy out-patients to the Chronic Disease Laboratory, Catholic Medical School, who have been registered and treated during the reporting 4 years since January 1965 until the end of December 1968, are as follows: 1. Their dwelling places show 67.05% in Seoul, and next in Kyonggi Do Province and Chlingchong Namdo Province in order, but 58.26% of them were born in Kyongsang Bukdo and Namdo, Cholla Namdo and Hukdo where leprosy is highly endemic, and in many of them the disease appeared while they were living in Seoul. 2. The number of patients registered to the Laboratory since opening out-patient clinic showed increasing every year during the 4 years, and annually 90 patients were registered during the last 2 years, which means averagely 2 new cases were treated every 3 days. 3. There were more male patients than the female as in the ratio of 2.7 to 1. And there were more patients in the ages of thirties than in twenties years of age. The percentages of 0-l9, 20-49 and over 50 years of ages are 8.05%, 80.45% and 11.49% so there were more old patients than the young ones. 4. Onset age of them are 24.90% in 15-19 years for the highest, 57.09% in 15-29, 16.48% in thirties and 13.78% in forties years of age. Duration after onset shows that less than 5 years (1964-1968) occupies 45.60%, less than 15 years(1954-1968) takes 81.61%. As the duration after onset gets longer, Indeterminate and Borderline groups are apt to turn into either Lepromatous or Tuberculoid types. And Lepromatous type gets worse more quickly than Tuberculoid type. 5. The Classification of their disease showed 43.30% in Tuberculoid type for the highest, 31.80% in Lepromatous type, 20.69% in Indeterminate group and 4.21% in Borderline group. And there were very few severe cases among them. In determining the type of the disease, it is important to examine the patient with clinical symptoms and immunological view for the classification of Indeterminate group, and besides, for the determination of Borderline group, bacteriological examination and histopathological study should be referred. 6. There were more physical disability resulting from leprosy in male patients than in female ones. 70.9% of them had already physical disabilities. Comparatively many patients had the lesion on face, and hands & feet, feet, hands in order. As for the degree of the disabilities many of them are Grade 2 and 1 in hands, Grade 1 In feet and face. And more disabilities were found in left side than right one. 7. Those who were diagnosed for the first time as leprosy and started taking treatment are 49.8% of the total, and 47.1% of them had already DDS or other sulphon drugs. 8. As for the results of bacteriological examinations before and after treatment, all of Borderline group showed positive, 49.4% positive in Lepromatous type and 5.3% positive in Tuberculoid type, but Indeterminate group showed negative in all cases. Since one year after started taking treatment, the rate of bacteriologically positive began to decrease and it was very apparent that the strong positive became weak positive. As for the method of bacteriological examination, it was the incidence that the method of A.F.B. stain from the biopsies of the skin showed more accurate detection than that of Waders skin scraped incision method. 9. Those who had reactions in leprosy during treatment are 5.7%-10.8% in Lepromatous type and 5.3% in Tuberculoid type. 10. 37.93% of the total have been referred from other doctors, specialty from dermatologists. 4.60% through contact examination and 57.47% consulted the clinic by themselves. |
