Background and Purpose: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is one of the most commonly encountered sleep disorders. The prevalence of RLS and its association with leprosy has not previously been elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of RLS in leprosy and determine the presence and amount of sleep disruption in leprosy patients with RLS. Methods: Leprosy patients who lived in Sorokdo between May 2010 and October 2010 were included in this study. The diagnosis of RLS and the severity assessment were made using the criteria described by the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group. Results: RLS was present in 61 (25.8%) of 236 leprosy patients. The mean Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score was higher among leprosy patients with RLS than those without. (10.9 vs. 8.8; p=0.018) Conclusions: The frequency of RLS among leprosy patients was markedly higher than that of RLS in general population. Leprosy patients should be examined for RLS and treatment of RLS can potentially improve sleep. Key Words: restless legs syndrome, leprosy, prevalence, sleep
